IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Richie Tozier
Canon: IT, film adaptation. Chapter One: (2017)
Canon Point: In the midst of the struggle beneath Neibolt with IT in their attempt to rescue Beverly.
Background:
"Oh, okay. Trash the Trashmouth, I get it."
• Information on IT: "Wait, can only virgins see this stuff? Is that why I'm not seeing this shit?"
• World Description/Setting Information: "I hear the list is longer than my wang."
Suitability:
Derry, Maine is a small isolated town near Bangor that was struck with an evil that preys upon the weak in its homestead every 27 years. That same evil has made a bedrock out of the intricate sewer system beneath the town and its presence has actively poisoned the people within its borders for centuries. It breeds the worst of humanity and growing up before taking on Pennywise the dancing clown Richie already had to avoid lecherous adults and bullies his age with murderous rage and pocket-knives. He's witnessed actual horror, seen the worst of what a person can be and what's really crawling around in the dark. What he's experienced goes so far beyond that of a run-of-the-mill teenager, and what he's witnessed and had to live through has made him familiar with survival and standing up to fear.
Powers:
Richie is a thirteen-year-old boy in the mid-1980s his only real skillsets are talking shit, playing video games, and serious bicycling. He's got a good head on his shoulders and is the smartest of his group in terms of being educated and book smart, this intellect ties directly into a sense of realism too, putting him slightly ahead of the curve where the other losers are concerned. His most prolific skill would be talking, and he's well-known for running his mouth. He could sell water to a whale and make it believable enough to distract from any unwanted questions, he's been in the business of using that skill and doing impressions for years and has been given the nickname "Trashmouth," because of that and has lack of a filter.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
After Bill's little brother Georgie goes missing he and the rest of the losers follow the bread crumbs of missing children to the truth of what is really going on in Derry, Maine. In the pursuit of recovering the truth about Georgie, Richie is faced with hard truths about himself, his parents, and the very nature of what he'd grown up in and around. He found true friends and stared down real evil in the process.
Overcoming that adversity helped Richie to develop bonds with people that were more than surface-level and to open up and rely on someone other than himself. It showed him his courage, his cunning, and the lengths he'll take to achieve a goal. Dancing with death can make you feel unstoppable, but he remained grounded throughout the ordeal. It also reminded him of his mortality and the truth he'd been avoiding that the world was a cruel place and people rarely thought about anything but themselves. Fighting IT in the sewers gave him the push he needed to keep on being self-reliant, but also helped him form bonds with the other losers and learn what was really worth fighting for.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
With what Richie’s seen and had to deal with on a regular basis at such a young age, his moral compass is always pointed inward. He takes on more responsibility than he has to and has always turned his grief on himself like an attack dog. Early into the film, this is used to It’s advantage, “Don’t touch the other boys, Richie – Don’t or they’ll know you’re secret.” His lack of adult supervision and any nurturing influence in his life and the overall judgment of the town has led Richie to act one way to protect himself and hide who he truly is and how he truly feels to protect everyone else by association.
The loud antics, the comedy, and the punchlines at the most inopportune moments are all part of the ruse. He's got a fast mouth and is a straight shooter and uses this to keep other people grounded and aware of themselves. He's the first guy to list the things about other people he likes to bolster them and to give someone a good laugh if they need it. Loyal to a fault, Richie always walks the line for his friends even at the expense of himself. His own needs get placed on the backburner in favor of showing others the compassion he never received. The Losers being his chosen family helped him to develop this behavior and implement it and even after the summer of 1989 the standard never left him.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Resentment and Admiration can sometimes go hand in hand for Richie. He favors valiance and dedication where Bill Denbrough is concerned and thinks of Eddie Kaspbrak and his loyalty and compassion like something pristine and unattainable. Other strengths like Ben's sense of history and architecture leave him feeling less useful and more dependent. Richie can appreciate the differences in others where most of Derry likes to pinpoint and assault them but he's never openly said as much. These are things that he keeps to himself and tries to emulate where appropriate. The courage and confidence displayed by Bill and Beverly were paramount in his own self-evaluation while dealing with Pennywise. Richie could more confidently follow in suit because he was following Bill and could forget his own doubts and anxieties because of it. His favorite quality in a person has to be their sense of humor, above all, and the ability to pick up on the uptake. Verbal tete a tete is a gift, and he's used to being shut down for running his mouth without parsing his words.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
A mess of insecurity is putting it lightly. Richie is most critical of himself and hides those feelings behind smarm and wordplay. He grapples with himself as he truly is and his perception of who he should be. He's too feminine, too unseemly, too this, or too that. He's a disappointment to his mother, a blight on his father's good name, and deserving of the abuse he endures at the hands of Bowers and the rest of their town full of bullies.
Referenced in the flashback scene in the Second Chapter film, in The Aladdin and in the subsequent waking nightmare he had to face with IT his biggest secret and the biggest part of himself he reckons with is his still budding sexuality. These things are featured often especially when Pennywise is nearby, or by the assholes in his town.
He's got a well-known reputation despite his best attempts to bury it and his truth deep, deep down. It's still prominent enough to warrant openly obvious flirtation and mocking from Patrick Hockstetter in the hallways of their school but he keeps it under wraps because it's a death sentence in a place like Derry where kids go missing every other day and abuse seems to be the norm.
What is their sign, and why?
The Hanged Man:
Torn between The Lovers and this card, I chose The Hanged Man because of Richie and his opinions of himself. With the way that the first movie ends and the flashbacks following that summer in the second film, it made the most sense to me for Richie to have this card. Richie has always felt like a pariah and he knows that he's a loser but more often than not he's learned to use it to his advantage and has developed a sense of pragmatism and cynicism thanks to it. He's one of the most grounded in the loser's club and approaches things within that sense often. Given the negatives and positives of this card versus the other option, I was considering it was an easy choice. Richie both as a teenager and in adulthood embodies this sign.
